William J. Canning, Founder
Mr. Canning was born in Providence, Rhode Island where he attended La Salle Academy. Bill graduated from Providence College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics on a full baseball scholarship.
After graduation, he signed as a pitcher with the Houston Colt .45s now the Houston Astros. After playing professional baseball, Bill moved back to Providence, RI and began working for the City of Providence. He served on the Providence City Planning Commission. Bill also worked for Progress for Providence and Model Cities Program.
In 1976, he struck out on his own forming the Canning Management Group developing and acquiring single family homes. Bill quickly scaled up into the development of large scale multi-family assets specializing in tax sheltered syndicated real estate investments specifically United States Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 8 Rental Certificate Program, Section 236 Preservation Program, Section 202 Housing for the Elderly and Low Income Housing Tax Credits. He fostered investor relationships across the country attracting limited and general partners from California, The District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New York and Washington State to develop multifamily housing in Providence, RI.
Bill would ultimately grow the Canning Management Group to manage 850 units throughout Rhode Island. His long term prospective as a developer, owner and manager provides the insight and experience necessary for Canning Management Group to create maximum value for both their owned and managed assets.
Bill is a long standing and active member of National Leased Housing Association, Institute of Real Estate Management and the Rhode Island Builders Association. He is an avid tennis player.
